With Chicagoans under a “stay at home” order, and fewer people using taxis, the city is working on plans for subsidies for cab drivers and owners, to make sure they can keep operating during the coronavirus outbreak. Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office said the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection is working on a direct subsidy for the taxi industry, as well as a short-term subsidy for wheelchair-accessible taxis. These measures are being taken to support taxi drivers and operators while ensuring transportation options remain available for those that need them, particularly the most vulnerable that rely on ADA and paratransit services for essential trips.
