The city of Berlin has developed a planning guideline for temporary bicycle lanes in order to provide more space for cyclists, especially in the area in front of traffic lights and at intersections throughout the city. The initiative has been implemented in order to improve cycling safety, allow for physical distancing, utilize roadspace underused by cars during COVID-19 and to provide an attractive alternative to public transport. Officials indicated that locations of bicycle lanes were part of long term plans to improve cycling infrastructure in the city.
