Flone Initiative has partnered with Humanity Kenya on an unconditional cash transfer initiative. The initiative focuses on raising funds for women professionals who rely on public transport and are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This effort has enabled poor households to consume nutritious foods and make essential investments in childrens’ schooling and health. These mobile money cash transfers have provided recipients with cash in order to avoid potential massive gatherings that food distributions can draw. Specifically, Flone is working with various partners, among them Humanity Kenya, the Cotswold Foundation, and other donors, to offer these cash transfers. Since May 2020, this initiative has supported thirty-one women professionals in public transport with cash transfers of between 500 and 2,000 shillings each. A follow-up conversation with the women has indicated that they spent the money on basic needs.
