The pedestrianisation of Church Street, a major high-street in the central business district of Bengaluru, was done under the Clean Air Street Initiative (a joint venture between the IISc Sustainable Transportation Lab and Energy Systems Catapult) and with the extensive help of government partners led by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT). This pilot effort was run between November 2020 and February 2021 on the weekends. As a testbed, the project aimed to demonstrate the benefits of pedestrianisation in changing behaviours towards active mobility, and increasing the liveliness and economic recovery of high streets affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Partners involved: Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Sustainable Transportation Lab, Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru Traffic Police, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Energy Systems Catapult
