Gliwice is integrating more greenery, reduced car traffic, and unifying architecture in order to change its image. In agreement with the Śródmieście District Council, the local government is working to create more gastronomic gardens that are more resident-friendly spaces. The idea was born mainly from the desire to help entrepreneurs, especially those affected by the pandemic. Because lockdown restrictions have had a negative impact on the operations of dining establishments, many restaurants have expressed interest in displaying summer gastronomic gardens, seeing it as an opportunity to attract more customers. Previously this has not been possible for businesses operating in the city’s narrow streets. While the topic of limiting traffic in the Old Town area of Gliwice had previously popped up, it was supposed to be implemented gradually. The epidemic accelerated the course of events the city was trying to tackle. Because of this, traffic in the Old Town will be reduced much faster than planned. The city has required external arrangements to be properly fenced and secured with stable structures made of natural materials. Stabilizing elements will also be covered with greenery or have decorative functions. The arrangement of new outdoor dining spaces will be possible only when they do not pose a threat to safety and when their location will not hinder the movement of pedestrians – ensuring convenient ways of passage for services, suppliers, and residents.
